Reiki’s Birthplace – Mount Kurama

A Sacred Mountain Steeped in Spiritual Power

Mount Kurama, located in the forested mountains just north of Kyoto, Japan, is the legendary site where Mikao Usui Sensei, the founder of Reiki, underwent a 21-day spiritual retreat in 1922. It was during this time of fasting and meditation on Kurama’s summit that he received the sacred energy and insights that would become the Reiki healing system.

This mountain has long been revered as a place of power. Ancient folklore speaks of Tengu (mountain spirits) and Mao-son, a celestial being said to protect the mountain and guide spiritual seekers. Kurama is more than a physical destination — it is an energetic gateway to healing and awakening.

When you walk its trails, you walk through living history.

When you meditate here, you reconnect with Reiki at its purest source.

The Sacred Connection Between Reiki & Mount Kurama

Where Energy Meets Origin

Mount Kurama is not just the birthplace of Reiki—it is the living embodiment of its essence. The mountain’s natural energy fields, ancient cedar forests, and sacred shrines vibrate with the same universal life force that Reiki channels. Every step taken here mirrors the inner journey of healing and awakening.

Usui Sensei’s Spiritual Awakening

It was on Kurama’s summit that Mikao Usui Sensei experienced a profound state of enlightenment after 21 days of fasting and meditation. This awakening gave birth to the system of Reiki healing, bridging the wisdom of nature, spirit, and human consciousness.

A Path of Reconnection

Even today, Reiki practitioners visit Mount Kurama to recharge, meditate, and reconnect with the original source of Reiki energy. The mountain continues to serve as a powerful reminder that healing is not taught—it is remembered, through harmony with nature and spirit.

Receiving Reiki: The Initiation Process

You don’t need years of meditation, spiritual practice, or special techniques to begin using Reiki. The ability to channel Reiki begins with the initiation you receive during the class.

In Reiki, initiation is the foundation of the training.

  • In Western Reiki, it’s often called an Attunement
  • In the Japanese system, it’s known as Reiju
  • In Holy Fire® Reiki, this process is called a Placement

During your class, you’ll receive these Placements, which gently adjust your entire energy system — opening your energy pathways, shifting deeper layers of consciousness, and connecting you directly to the Reiki Source. This process will be customised uniquely for you.

Receiving Placement is just the doorway.

The Placement connects you to Reiki for life, and the quality and quantity of the  Reiki you channel will grow with time and continued practice.
